Announcing the Peace & Reconciliation Library
Honoring Colonel Chuck Meadows, USMC (Retired)

Retired Marine Colonel.  Viet Nam combat decorated veteran. Mentor.  Humanitarian.  Friend.

Those words describe Chuck Meadows.  He spent 26 years in the Marine Corps, including two tours in Viet Nam.  Since his retirement he has returned to Vietnam more than thirty times on personal missions of peacemaking and reconciliation. Now we have an opportunity to recognize Chuck for his leadership, service, friendship, and for all he has done for the children and families of Vietnam. The Peace and Reconciliation Library will be built in Quang Tri Province under the direction of PeaceTrees. The building will honor Chuck for his dedicated and ongoing efforts to create peace and understanding with the people of Vietnam. General Peter Pace, USMC (Retired), 16th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is sponsoring the library project as a tribute to his friend and former commanding officer.

The Pat Lucero Library

Read the March 9, 2010, Denver Post article on the the touching story of James Lewis' heartfelt mission to honor his fallen friend, Pat Lucero, by building a library in his memory in Vietnam.

Written by James Lewis:

"Pat Lucero was a graduate of Pueblo East High School, Pueblo, Colorado, class of 1966. He served in the U.S. Army, 173rd. Airborne Division and was sent to Viet Nam in 1967. Pat was killed in action on March 14, 1968 near Sai Gon while serving as point man in a search and destroy mission. With his death, we who knew him, lost part of ourselves; Pat's family and friends mourn his loss to this very day. The mention of his name still brings tears to his Mother's eyes. Pat's family has suffered most--his memories reopening the wounds of his loss. After 41 years, his passing still touches our lives and is difficult to accept. Nothing will ever replace the loving presence of Pat. But in recounting his life, his family and friends find joy in the way he lived it.

To honor Pat and his life, a library is going to be built in Vietnam and dedicated in his name. This project is not to lament Pat's death, but to honor his life and the way he lived his 19 years.  We are writing to invite you to help us honor Pat's legacy by supporting the library.

March 21, 2009: The first day of spring, the Jesse Griego Kindergarten was dedicated.  It's located in the remote village of A Xing, Quang Tri Province.  The families in A Xing are ethnic minority people, members of the Bru Van Kieu and Pa Ko tribes.  The school will accommodate up to 50 kindergarteners, giving the children a much-needed head start on their education.  PeaceTrees worked with dedicated supporter Jim Lewis to help bring his vision of building a school in honor of his fallen comrade Jesse Griego.  Jim and five other travelers went to Quang Tri to dedicate the school with the A Xing community.  They had a life changing experience planting trees and sharing a celebration feast with the community.  The Jesse Griego Kindergarten project was brought to reality because of Jim Lewis and hundreds of generous donors from around the United States who want to help bring renewal, reconciliation and lasting peace to the children and people of Vietnam.  View WPBF News 25's interview with Jim Lewis.
